Where a manicure ends and nail extensions begin

A manicure is care of the nail and the skin around it: removing the previous colour, cutting and filing, pushing back the cuticles, light buffing and moisturising. Nail work begins where the manicure stops: the application techniques, semi-permanent polish, gel, tips or forms, that lengthen or strengthen the nail and last several weeks.

Both work perfectly well outside a salon: all it takes is a table, a chair and a socket for the lamp, and the provider brings the rest. On Swigo you choose the person yourself, you see their rate before booking, and the payment is only released once the service is done.

  • Removing an application done elsewhere, if it was not mentioned when booking

Semi-permanent, gel, tips: what you are actually booking

  • Semi-permanent polish

Base, colour and top coat cured under the lamp, with no lengthening. It lasts two to three weeks and comes off with remover.

  • Gel and tips

A material that lengthens and strengthens the nail. It lasts three to four weeks and has to be filed off, never pulled off.

  • The infill

As the nail grows, the base is caught up without removing everything. Quicker and cheaper than a fresh application, and due every three to four weeks.

  • A manicure without colour

Filing, cuticles and moisturising, with no polish. It is the basis of all the others, and sometimes all your nails actually need.

In Geneva a lot of nail work still happens across the border, on price. The sums change once you count the journey, the wait and going back every three weeks for an infill. On Swigo you compare the profiles, reviews and rates of the providers available in your municipality, from Geneva to Carouge, Meyrin, Vernier or Lancy, and you choose yourself who looks after your nails.

Frequently asked questions, manicure

How long it lasts, hygiene, price: the questions that come up most often.

How long does a manicure last?

Classic polish lasts a few days. Semi-permanent lasts two to three weeks, a gel application three to four. Beyond that the colour still holds, but the regrowth shows at the base: that is the moment for an infill.

Do I need to prepare anything at home?

A table at a comfortable height, two chairs and a socket for the lamp. Make sure you can air the room, electric files create dust and some products have a strong smell. Nothing else: the provider arrives with their own equipment and products.

Does semi-permanent damage the nails?

The application does not. It is the removal that does damage, when the material is pulled off instead of being filed and dissolved, along with over-aggressive buffing beforehand. A nail that turns thin, soft or ridged after several applications almost always points to one of those two things rather than to the product itself.

What makes the price vary?

Four things, in this order: the technique, since semi-permanent costs considerably less than a gel application with lengthening; the length and shape you ask for; the nail art, from a simple French to nail-by-nail designs; and the removal, included by some providers and charged separately by others. Each provider sets their own rate: it is on their profile and confirmed to you before booking.

How do I know the equipment is clean?

Just ask. Files, buffers and sticks are porous: they should be single-use or kept for you alone. Metal tools are disinfected between clients. At your place everything is unpacked in front of you, which is more transparent than in a treatment room.

How far ahead should I book?

A few days is enough midweek. Saturdays, the day before public holidays and the wedding season from May to September go much faster: allow one to two weeks ahead for a specific date.
