When to choose threading over wax
Two techniques that remove hair at the root, unlike a razor which cuts it at the surface. Wax pulls a whole area at once, which makes it fast on legs, underarms and bikini line. Threading catches hairs one by one without putting anything on the skin: it is the technique for the face and the brows, and the only comfortable option on fine or reactive skin.
Hair then grows back finer and more sparsely, and a rhythm settles at around three to four weeks. On Swigo you choose the beautician yourself, you see their rate before booking, and the payment is only released once the service is done.

What is included, and what is not
This scope is indicative: it describes what is usually covered. Every provider adjusts their own, and you confirm it with them before booking.
-
The face
Brows, upper lip, chin and cheeks. With wax or thread, depending on your skin.
-
The body
Full legs or half legs. Underarms, arms and back. Bikini line, high bikini or full.
-
Around the appointment
Skin assessment before the first session. Soothing aftercare. Advice on rhythm and on preventing ingrown hairs.
-
Optional
Waxing for someone else straight after, in the same slot, to be stated when booking.
What is not included
- Permanent hair removal by laser or IPL, which needs different equipment, training and setting
- Waxing skin on retinoids or isotretinoin: the skin comes away with the wax, so it has to wait until the course ends
- Waxing over sunburn, a wound, eczema or a varicose vein
- Areas exfoliated or peeled the same day
- Medical skin treatment, which belongs to a dermatologist
Spatulas and strips are single-use, and nothing that touches the skin goes back into the pot. Something extra to add? Many providers are happy to take on an extra area, agree it before booking.

Wax or thread, and on which area
-
Hot wax
Applied and lifted without a strip, moulding to the skin. It is the most comfortable on the bikini line and underarms, where skin is thin and hair is dense.
-
Warm wax with strips
Faster on large areas, legs and arms. It trades comfort for speed, and it says so plainly.
-
Threading
Hair by hair, with nothing placed on the skin. The technique for the face and the brows, and the only real option on reactive skin or skin under exfoliating treatment.
-
The rhythm
Three to four weeks between sessions. Hair grows finer as the sessions add up, as long as you do not shave in between.
Waxing is not judged on one session but over a quarter: it is a regular appointment rather than a rescue job the night before a trip. It is also a service many people would rather not travel to a salon for, for reasons of privacy that need no explaining. On Swigo you compare the profiles, reviews and rates of the providers available in your municipality, from Geneva to Carouge, Meyrin, Vernier or Lancy, and you choose yourself who looks after it.
Frequently asked questions, waxing
Hair length, pain, rhythm: the questions that come up most often.
How long does the hair need to be?
About five millimetres, so two to three weeks without a razor or trimmer. It is the most important condition and the one most often overlooked: on hair that is too short, the wax has nothing to grip and the session is wasted. If you shaved less than two weeks ago, move the appointment rather than keeping it.
Does it hurt?
The first sessions, yes, especially on the bikini line and underarms. It eases noticeably after that, because the hair grows finer. Three things help: avoiding the days just before your period, when sensitivity is higher; skipping a very hot shower beforehand; and telling the beautician, who will adjust the strip size and the pace.
How do I avoid ingrown hairs?
A gentle exfoliation twice a week, resumed two days after the session rather than the day before, plus a daily moisturiser. Avoid tight clothing for twenty-four hours. If ingrown hairs persist on one area anyway, say so: the beautician will change the direction of pull or suggest threading there.
I shave, can I switch to waxing?
Yes, and it is the best moment to change. Let it grow for two to three weeks before the first session, without touching it, then stop shaving between appointments. The first two or three sessions are the least comfortable because the hairs are not all at the same stage of growth; from the fourth onwards the cycle falls into step.
What makes the price vary?
The number and size of the areas above all, since an upper lip is not a pair of full legs; then the technique, as threading takes longer than wax over the same surface; and whether you group several areas into one appointment, which almost always works out cheaper. Each provider sets their own rate: it is on their profile and confirmed to you before booking.
What should I avoid afterwards?
For twenty-four hours: sun, sauna, steam room, swimming pool, intense exercise and tight clothing. The skin is raw even when it does not look it, and that is when it reacts most easily. A fragrance-free soothing cream that evening is enough.
