Gardening by the hour, from a city balcony to a villa garden
This is the everyday upkeep of your green spaces, in the season when it needs doing: mowing and edging, trimming hedges and shrubs, hand weeding, leaf clearing, repotting and watering while you are away. It applies to a villa garden as much as to a fifteen square metre terrace in town, where the work is the same on a smaller scale.
It is charged by the hour, with the provider’s own tools. On Swigo you choose who comes, you see their rate before booking, and the payment is only released once the work is done.

- Any work at height needing a cherry picker, a harness or a chainsaw off the ground
- Applying pesticides and weedkillers, whose use is restricted by law
- Burning green waste, which is prohibited

Something extra to add? Many providers are happy to take on an additional task. Agree it before booking, it saves misunderstandings on the day.

What a gardener by the hour does, and what needs a specialist
-
Everyday upkeep
Mowing, edging, hand weeding, clearing. This is the heart of the service, and it is where regularity changes everything: a visit every fortnight in season saves a full restoration later.
-
Pruning at head height
Hedges, shrubs, roses, climbers. Everything that can be done from the ground or a low stepladder. Above that you need a trained climber, and it stops being the same trade or the same insurance.
-
Trees
Felling and tree surgery need authorisation in the canton and belong to a specialist firm. A serious gardener points you in the right direction instead of reaching for the chainsaw.
-
Balconies and terraces
In town, most gardening happens in pots: repotting, pruning, watering, seasonal replanting. One or two hours is enough, and it is booked like anything else.
Gardening is the most seasonal service in the catalogue: in March and April everyone wants the same Saturday. Book ahead, and think in terms of regular visits rather than one big catch-up, which always costs more. On Swigo you compare the profiles, reviews and rates of the providers available in your municipality, from Geneva to Carouge, Meyrin, Vernier or Lancy, and you choose yourself who looks after your garden.
Frequently asked questions, gardening
Season, green waste, trees: the questions that come up most often.
Who supplies the tools?
The provider, in the vast majority of cases: mower, hedge trimmer, secateurs, blower. If you would rather they used your equipment, say so when booking, it sometimes brings the rate down. Either way, do provide access to water and electricity.
What happens to the green waste?
It is gathered, bagged or binned and taken out to the municipal collection if you have one. Burning it is prohibited. For a large volume, a big hedge cut or clearing work, arrange transport with the provider or a skip: it is not covered by the hourly rate.
Can I have a tree felled?
Not on request alone. In Geneva, felling a tree needs cantonal authorisation, even in a private garden, and the work itself belongs to a specialist firm. A Swigo gardener maintains, prunes at head height and points you in the right direction, but will not touch a protected tree.
When should hedges be trimmed?
Heavy trimming is best done outside the nesting season, so from late summer through winter. In spring and early summer it is kept to a light shaping cut, and the hedge is checked for nests before anything starts.
Can someone water while I am on holiday?
Yes, it is a common request in July and August. It is booked in advance, in short regular slots, with a key or an access code handed over. Say so when booking, as not every provider offers it.
What if I only have a balcony?
That works perfectly well. One or two hours is enough to repot, prune, replace the seasonal plants and tidy the terrace. In town it is the most common request of all, and the hourly rate applies in the same way.
