What hot water extraction is, and which rugs suit it
This is a deep wash of floor textiles, carried out at your place with a hot water extraction machine: water and a product are injected into the fibre under pressure, then immediately drawn back out with the dirt they have lifted. A vacuum removes surface dust; hot water extraction goes after what has worked its way down into the pile, allergens and odours included.
Not everything can be washed this way, and that is what separates a good provider from the rest: wool, silk and hand-knotted rugs are treated in a workshop rather than in your living room. On Swigo you choose who comes, you see their rate before booking, and the payment is only released once the work is done.

What is included, and what is not
This scope is indicative: it describes what is usually covered. Every provider adjusts their own, and you confirm it with them before booking.
-
The assessment
Identifying the fibre and the backing. Colour-fastness test in a hidden corner. An honest opinion when the piece should not be treated on site.
-
The cleaning
Deep vacuuming before any water goes near it. Targeted treatment of identified stains. Hot water extraction, then rinsing until the water runs clear.
-
Afterwards
Pile brushed in the direction of the fibre. Drying and ventilation instructions. Furniture put back once dry, or pads fitted.
-
Optional
Fabric sofa and armchairs, mattresses, stair runners, to be stated when booking.
What is not included
- Hand-knotted, oriental, wool or silk rugs, which are washed in a workshop
- Kilims, hides, sisal and seagrass, which cannot take water
- Fitted carpets that have lifted, rippled or already been bleached by a chlorine product
- Repairs, refringing and reshaping a rug
- Medical anti-dust-mite treatment and disinfection after damage
- Lifting and relaying a glued-down carpet
Something extra to add? Many providers are happy to take on an additional task. Agree it before booking, it saves misunderstandings on the day.

Four situations, four answers
-
Glued-down carpet
The natural ground for hot water extraction. Once or twice a year in a living room, more often with pets or on the ground floor.
-
Synthetic rugs
These are treated on site without difficulty. Allow longer drying than a fitted carpet, because the water cannot drain through the backing and stays in the thickness.
-
Hand-knotted rugs
Wool, silk, old dyes: washed flat in a workshop, with controlled drying. It costs more than a visit at home, and it is what protects the value of the piece.
-
Sofas and mattresses
Same machine, same principle, on a care label that allows water. It is often the best way to use the end of a slot already booked for a rug, or an extra to add to a deep clean.
Floor textiles cleaned once a year last considerably longer: the sand and dust trapped at the base of the pile act like sandpaper with every step. On Swigo you compare the profiles, reviews and rates of the providers available in your municipality, from Geneva to Carouge, Meyrin, Vernier or Lancy, and you choose yourself who looks after your pieces.
Frequently asked questions, carpets and rugs
Stains, odours, wool: the questions that come up most often.
Do old stains come out?
Often, though not always. Coffee, wine, grease and mud respond well if they have not been rubbed or heated. Bleach, ink, dye and burns, on the other hand, have destroyed the colour in the fibre: no cleaning brings it back, and an honest provider will tell you so before starting.
What about pet odours?
A urine smell comes from what has soaked through to the backing rather than from the surface. Treating it calls for an enzyme product and dwell time, sometimes two visits, and the result depends on how old it is. Mention it when booking, it changes both the product and the time allowed.
My rug is wool, can it be cleaned at my place?
Machine-woven wool can sometimes take an on-site treatment, with a suitable product and very little water. A hand-knotted rug, an old oriental piece or anything in silk, no: those are washed in a workshop. The provider’s assessment decides, after the colour test.
How often should it be done?
Once a year in a normal living room, twice with pets, young children or a ground floor opening onto the street. Between visits, it is regular vacuuming that does the work: it is what removes the sand, and it is the sand that wears out the fibre.
Is the price per square metre or per hour?
On Swigo the service is booked by the hour, like the others. In practice a provider estimates the time from the area and the condition: allow two to three hours for a twenty square metre room, more if there is a lot of stain treatment.
